SPOTLIGHT: Kustom Kolor's 540i Touring
12/4/2019
If you know BMW, you know that the BMW Touring models have a cult following.
Ever since the automaker decided to put an estate back on a saloon model, people have been lapping them up. Some models are more sought after than others, though, and the E34 540i is right up there with the best of them.
As a 540i, the vehicle packs a V8 engine under the hood – a sign of things to come in the E39 M5.
With two more cylinders than the legendary E34 M5, it has a unique exhaust note in the E34 lineup. But that’s not the only unique thing about this Touring…
Kustom Kolors has reworked the entire car in an OEM+ style.
The inside has been tastefully retrimmed with red leather and alcantara, with tri-stitching on the M-Tech 2 steering wheel. An Air Lift Performance 3H controller has been custom mounted into the center console in order to keep the ride height presets within arms reach while cruising.
AC Schnitzer wheels suit the E34 perfectly and are a period-correct addition to the build.
Anyone into ’90s accessories will know exactly how difficult it is to get these centers and the Kustom Kolors crew have built them out to a perfect standard – the lips just meet the arches at full drop.
Up front, the 540i features the distinctive, wide 8-cylinder kidney grills in chrome to match the wheel lips, but everything else has been darkened down. It makes the front of the car look really quite menacing, especially at such a low height.
There’s almost a VIP-Japanese look to the car with the dark grey and polished-silver theme, something that is re-affirmed by the big V8 engine.
Looking at the car laid out, it’s easy to see why the BMW Touring’s are so popular – they look sporty (for a wagon) and have tons of room for both luggage and people. This might just be the perfect European road trip car – and that’s exactly what Kustom Kolors has been exploring with it.
